Guidelines and Policies

Volunteer Starkville is dedicated to connecting volunteers with opportunities within the Starkville, MS community that aim to improve the quality of life in Starkville and Oktibbeha County.

Thus we've established some guidelines to govern the process of listing organizations on VolunteerStarkville.org and have established a Privacy Policy to help protect our volunteers and registered organizations using this website.

The key word organization used on the VolunteerStarkville.org refers to a non-profit or charitable organization under the 501(c) IRS guidelines.

501(c) organization or simply "a 501(c)" is a tax-exempt, nonprofit corporation or association. Section 501(c) of the United States Internal Revenue Code (26 U.S.C. § 501(c)), provides that 26 types of nonprofit organizations are exempt from some federal income taxes. Sections 503 through 505 set out the requirements for attaining such exemptions. Many states refer to Section 501(c) for definitions of organizations exempt from state taxation as well. [Ref: Wikipedia.com]

non-profit organization (abbreviated as NPO, also known as a not-for-profit organization) is an organization that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead uses them to help pursue its goals. Examples of NPOs include charities (i.e. charitable organizations), trade unions, and public arts organizations. Most governments and government agencies meet this definition. [Ref: Wikipedia.com]

charitable organization is a type of non-profit organization (NPO). The term is relatively general and can technically refer to a public charity (also called "charitable foundation," "public foundation" or simply "foundation") or a private foundation. It differs from other types of NPOs in that its focus is centered around goals of a general philanthropic nature (e.g. charitableeducationalreligious, or other activities serving the public interest or common good). [Ref: Wikipedia.com]
