Volunteers Needed: Noxubee Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center Volunteers

31554daafdd055254c42007b11f7fa9ba0e56ab3The Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge is seeking volunteers to serve in the visitor center to help ensure that the center can remain open and to ensure that our visitors have a memorable and safe experience at the refuge. As staff and funding levels for the refuge decrease, volunteers play an important role in the operation of the refuge. The volunteers perform similar duties as the refuge park ranger.

These duties include providing interpretation, orientation, and information to visitors; collecting fees and selling permits to visitors; providing telephone and receptionist services; performing opening/closing duties at the visitors center; maintaining the cleanliness of the visitors center, restrooms, and front desk area; and assisting the park ranger with special projects and events.

The Refuge is seeking applicants who have strong customer service skills and some public speaking ability. Natural history knowledge is helpful, but more important is the ability to communicate in a clear, friendly, and enthusiastic way with a wide variety of people. Preferred attributes include: a positive attitude, a patient disposition, a desire to learn about and explore the refuge, enthusiasm for serving the public, and a strong work ethic. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and must pass a federal background check prior to starting. Onsite training will be provided to suitable candidates. Candidates must commit to volunteering at least 16 hours a week at the refuge.
